Welcome back to my little corner of the internet!
After the beautiful town of Monsanto (you can read about it in my previous post) we are ready to head towards our next stop: Porto. We have a bit over three hours of driving ahead of us and we would like to make a pit stop in one of the major natural parks in Portugal: the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela.
This park with over 1,000 km² gives you an alpine experience. Driving through this enormous park, you get the feeling of being in Austria, with the mountainous roads, picturesque villages and ice cold streams.
We stopped at the Lagoa to see a few iconic lakes.
As the image shows, it was incredibly windy and at almost 2,000 m, also really cold. We strolled along the major lake, which serves also as a dam.
In the summer, fire has burnt down considerable parts of this park and the burnt trees are a sad reminder of the raging flames that caused havoc.
All in all, it was an impressive drive, however, I expected to be able to walk more. Of course, I am conscious of the size of this park and driving through allowed us to see the different landscapes, but I would have enjoyed a parking lot from where you could have had a nice walk through some iconic views.
For now, I’ll see you in Porto [To be continued…]
