Day 166: Sudan and Salata Tomatim Bel Daqua

Good evening, Raffies!

Today we are going to Sudan and, in order to change from the amazing meat we had to South Sudan, we are going for a rich and wonderful salad: Salata Tomatim Bel Daqua.
This is a simple tomato salad with a peanut butter dressing.

Sudanese cuisine and South Sudanese cuisine are very similar. A lot of sheep’s and goat’s meat is used. Mostly all of the goat is used, in order to let nothing go to waste. Personally, I really admire this behaviour. I think if you kill an animal, the least you can do it honour it by using all of it, like it is done in most ancient cultures and is still done nowadays in the few nomad tribes that are left on our planet.

Peanut butter is another basic ingredient in Sudanese cuisine. It is used in most dishes, from sauces to stews and dressings.
Before starting this challenge, I had barely eaten any peanut butter. I have never been a fan of peanut butter sandwiches. However, during this challenge, I have discovered the greatness of peanut butter to enhance the flavour of stews and soups.

The recipe is really simple and you will be done in no time. The result is a great salad that works perfectly as a meal on its own.

You’ll need:

5 tomatoes, chopped and seeds removed
4 green onions, sliced
1-2 green chilies, chopped
1/2 c parsley, chopped
2 limes
1/4 c peanut butter
1/3 c peanut oil
salt

In a bowl, mix tomatoes, green onions, chilies and parsley. In another bowl, mix the oil and the peanut butter until smooth. Add the lime juice and salt. now mix the vegetables with the dressing, by carefully stirring. Serve and enjoy!

Love,

Raffi
